About Research protocols in CBPT

This course explores how rigorous research and clinical practice intersect in Cognitive Behavioral Play Therapy (CBPT). We begin with the historical and ethical foundations of psychotherapy research, then examine why and how we study treatment effects in children—highlighting the strengths and limits of randomized clinical trials alongside alternative methods such as case reports, case series, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses.
You will learn to identify the key methodological challenges that make child psychotherapy research complex (developmental variability, therapist effects, sample selection, blinding impossibilities, and real‑world accessibility and ethical constraints), and to translate those challenges into practical, ethically sound study designs suited to both public and private clinical settings.

Research protocols in CBPT Course Objectives

At the end of this module, participants should be able to:

  1. Summarize the historical context and current evidence base for psychotherapy research, with specific reference to CBPT.
  2. Explain the main strengths and limits of randomized clinical trials and alternative designs (case series, systematic reviews) for child psychotherapy research.
  3. Identify key methodological challenges in CBPT studies (blinding, sample size, therapist effects, developmental variability) and propose practical solutions.
  4. Design ethically sound, feasible research protocols for clinical settings that balance rigor with participant welfare and accessibility.
  5. Select and operationalize valid, age‑appropriate outcome measures and monitoring strategies for CBPT research.
  6. Use case reports and small‑scale studies to generate hypotheses and plan pilot projects that inform larger investigations.
