About CBPT Case Conceptualization Course
This training covers the important concept of Case Conceptualization in Cognitive Behavioral Play Therapy. Case Conceptualization is tied to theory and in that respect is different from diagnoses, which is atheoretical. Case Conceptualization provides a rationale and framework to develop and prioritize treatment goals. This training covers the factors that must be taken into account in developing a case conceptualization. First, we look at individual factors for each child. We will consider early experiences, attachment style, temperament, development (including developmental milestones), organizing beliefs, play skills and individual strengths. Next, we review Environmental factors, including family, parenting style, school, peer relationships and human diversity/cultural context. The presenting problem is clearly identified and better understood by considering emotions, thoughts, physical sensations and coping strategies. With all these factors in mind, we review important considerations for designing a CBPT treatment plan and Clinical Hypotheses. Treatment obstacles and Maintenance factors tied to specific child cases are reviewed. Finally, a case is presented for the participant to consider and utilize the Case Conceptualization worksheet as a way to solidify learning about Case Conceptualization.
